Craigslist is more of a hassle but a safer way to sell IF you do it the right way and only accept cash.

There's a lot of scams on Craigslist . You just have to have common sense and never wire money or pay pay . Always meet in public and just accept cash no exceptions .

You're only protected if you send to a PayPal confirmed address with sig.
Gotta read the Paypal rules if you don't want to get hosed. Sorry for you.

Damn, this thread's been necro'd like three times and still we don't know how the OP's saga turned out...unless I missed it while scanning.

I need closure!

Maybe it was this guy? It was, after all, in the "distant past".

I have scammed others in the distant past, using chargeback scams. I am now reformed.

Yes, it's terrible. There is not much you can do. They won't recover the money.

here is the scenario:

I sold my iPhone 4 on Ebay for pretty close to $700. The buyer *seemed* legit (good feedback, good communication throughout, left positive feedback for me). Now 2 weeks later he is filing a claim with paypal that the charge on his credit card was unauthorized. This means I owe paypal $700 and have no phone. He never once contacted me with any issues (that's because there are no REAL issues). I emailed him asking about this claim and surprise, no response.

.
700 $ for iPhone 4, this itself is very high; being in India, sometime back it was published in print media that we (folks in India), trying to sell products on our local buy/sell type of websites, are contacted by fakes trying to buy products double the price and asking them to ship it say USA/UK/Nigeria.

they always ask for Paypal payments. as per their study, mostly these guys are fakes and they try to do the same as it happened to you.

the article strongly advised not to go in for such deals.. it may be completely different case, but may be same as well. just a thought i shared...

It was sold in 2010 (date of OP), that's three years ago so the price is relative considering it was the latest iPhone at that time.

It often happens when old threads are resurrected and an easy mistake to make. I thought it sounded expensive myself until I checked the date

Take a counterfeit marker with you.

No fees and cash there and then.

I also use Facebook, there are lots of local for sale pages for our city, so most items get sold same day for cash again.

So, check facebook for a local for sale page upload your pictures of the items and prices. Again, no fees and easy transactions.
the UK is small enough that if it goes wrong you can visit the address
