I would worry more about condensation than cold, and let it warm up to room temp before turning it on.
Also, screw cancer, birth is the leading cause of death.

i leave my ipod classic 80GB in my glove box of my car all year round. the only time it comes out is to resync it here and there. its sustained 100F degree summer days with no issues (probably 120F inside) an the coldest winter days (15-20F). as expected, the LCD is sometimes sluggish in the colder temps but other than that i see no issues related to the extreme temps. its not advisable to treat it this way, but it can handle it just fine. i would be nervous keeping batteries at sustained high temps for prolonged periods of time though.

This. If an electronic device becomes very cold, put it in a sealed plastic bag, and let it warm up at room temperature. Will keep condensation from forming on the internals.

Mine was left in my mailbox for a day in at least -10 celsius, and it was messed up. However, I can not vouch that it was the cold that damaged it, or if it simply was just a turkey.
I did tell my mail-man off since he is NOT supposed to leave new iPad's up for grabs in my mailbox by the street!

This is absolutely not true.
Batteries don't fare well at below 0˚C, just take your camera outside in the cold and you will quickly notice diminished battery life. The same applies to electric vehicles, which loses the ability to hold a charge at cold temperatures.

I leave my iPad bundled in one of my coats when it's very cold out and still the aluminum back is freezing to the touch. But as I've come to find out, it's still fine to operate. Guess it's better suited to the cold than I am

I leave my window open at night, and leave my iPad in the windowsill. So it will be cold in the morning

The online apple store. But not their fault, it was the mail man that screwed up, he left it in my mailbox instead of just a slip telling me to come sign it out at the post office. Twice!

I've left my Gen 2 iPT in the car over nights when it was -20ºF or less outside.
The next day it will be sluggish or impossible to start. Until it warms up. The cold kills the battery until it gets warm enough to conduct. No other problems came about due to that cold. Yet. Been 4 years with plenty of cold iPT nights and no breakdowns so far. The iPad is probably just an iPT extreme.

But is the packaged identified to be from Apple? If not, he won't know what's in there. And really dumb move to piss of your postman. Just like pissing off your waiter before you are served your food.

Lots of people are thinking the exact same thing as we speak.
Zillions of tech toys out in our cars getting chilly. Brrrrrr I have some stuff in my car right now that i'm thinking about. I figure it's fine, as others have said, it's heat really that's the killer. then again, if it gets down to -10 ten, i'd go fetch it. Also, make sure you let it sit inside for an hour to adjust to the temperature change. I don't think this is all that important , but better safe then sorry. note: I abuse my iphone this way on a daily basis, so I wouldn't worry too much. |

If it's below freezing, be sure and stick your tongue out and touch the back of the iPad with it. Also, 15-20 seconds in the microwave will help warm it up and keep the condensation from forming on the inside....
Here's the official statement - "Keeping iPad Within Acceptable Temperatures Operate iPad in a place where the temperature is between 0o and 35o C (32o to 95o F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause iPad to temporarily stop working properly. Avoid dramatic changes in temperature or humidity when using iPad, as condensation may form on or within iPad. Store iPad in a place where the temperature is between -20o and 45o C (-4o to 113o F). Don’t leave iPad in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range. When you’re using iPad or charging the battery, it is normal for iPad to get warm. The exterior of iPad functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the unit to the cooler air outside." http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/...tion_Guide.pdf
