Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 - upgrade?

I have a MACbook running on a OS X 10.5.8 system (details below). I currently have Microsoft Office for Mac 2004, but am considering upgrading to 2008 or 2011. I am not doing anything "hard core" on my home computer - just letters/some excel work, etc. I have read on forums that when users have upgraded to a newer Microsoft Office version that their old documents have either not opened or the formatting has completely gone wrong - so conversion is not good. any thoughts on this?

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz

As long as your system meets the requirements, everything should be good. You can check the requirements here. As far as formatting issues, that is due to the upgraded software.
