To be used as an intelligent fully-programmable universal remote.

And no, no silly attachment, BUILT-IN.

Any other (Android?) alternative?

The main objective of an iPod touch is to be an entertainment device, a great portable music player and gaming device. I don't think having an infrared sensor is that important for it.

Agreed. iPod Touch with IR would make it far more useful. It would be functional as a music player, camera, light gaming system as well as a remote. The remote app alone is not good enough.

I've been using the Veemote Zapper for half a year and enjoy using it. If only the IR sensor was built in instead of a dongle. Then I don't have to keep a device with a 30-pin connector.
