Im more interested in the text and background image. The edges have been darkened and the background image has been modified to make the text stand out.

Anyone know how to do this?

The background image has been treated with a Vignette, the text has been treated with a Drop Shadow, though there is probably more involved.

Meh, pretty much got the gist of it.

I'd recommend using the Lighting Effects filter (Filter > Render > Lighting Effects...) as its almost as straight forward as you can get. Everything else is just basic blending effects as said above.
