Exported JPEGs larger than originals?

Hi, I'm a beginner photographer and I noticed when I Command + D in iPhoto and drag it onto my desktop, that file is bigger than the original in iPhoto which I imported from my Nikon. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Is the image quality the same as the original?
