AirPlay Streaming from a G5... Yes it's possible
I just sat down and watched some 1080p content off my Dual 2.3ghz G5 with no frame drops straight out of iTunes to my Apple TV 3
It didn't even use any real CPU resources. Yes it's possible to stream 1080p content over AirPlay with iTunes.

You can do it on G4s too, if they have Leopard.

Yup, been doing it on my PowerBook G4 for some time. I'm really worried an update to my Apple TV will kill it.

I doubt it. Even doubleTwist on Android has access to AirPlay.

Are you guys using some kind of special software to accomplish this? I was always under the impression that Airplay required a 2011 or newer Mac to function, which is why workarounds such as Airparrot exist. Are you saying it'll work on any Mac as long as its running Leopard or greater?

Useful software
ClickToPlugin and Media Center, two Safari extensions that, among other things, allow you to launch online videos on the AppleTV:
http://hoyois.github.com/safariexten...clicktoplugin/ http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/mediacenter/ AirFlick: http://ericasadun.com/ftp/AirPlay/ Extremely versatile software that sends videos, photos and PDF files to the ATV. For online videos you have to input links to the actual files, not to the webpages hosting them (using download links from browser add-ons like Unplug, VideoDownloadHelper or the aforementioned ClickToPlugin works fine) SendToAirflick http://norio-nomura.github.com/SendToAirFlick/ I have not much experience with this, but it seems to be an alternative to Media Center, at least for a few sites. It does not require AirFlick.

I'm a little sad that Apple have stopped supporting iTunes on these old machines but I guess it had to happen eventually. |
