Like you said, there are many it is hard to tell you which one exactly; however, Samsung drives are proving great.
I personally stay away from SandForce controllers.

He did say Macs, which is the main basis of my argument there. Personally, I look for Crucial or Intel drives (under Micron/Marvell or Intel controllers only).
OCZ Indilinx controller is really good, I like it and its done me no wrong.

The Crucial M4 is a good Marvell controlled SSD but its Write speeds are pathetically slow compared to is Read speeds.

Oh I forgot Indilinx controllers. They are good as well. I don't care much about Write speeds because in the end, writing depends on the medium being read from (USB 2.0, CD/DVD drive) which are slow readers. So I'll never see those speeds. I care more read for faster boots and processing.
I put a 512 GB SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series (MZ-7PD512BW) model in my 15" Mid 2010 MBP, when the product was first released.
After some very heavy usage in hours and workload, I'm very pleased with it's exemplary speed and overall performance. The install was fast, easy and trouble free.
It's the third Samsung 8 series SSD I've used in the last few years. They've all been terrific.

I just put an 840 Pro in my 2012 13" cMBP, and I'm very happy with the results.
I think there are several manufacturers that have good reputations that you most likely can't go wrong with. That said, I got the general sense that the Samsung drives were the best overall after a lot of research on the topic myself prior to purchase.

Samsung 830/840 Pro are probably the best drives on the market. But the 830 is extremely hard to find since it's an older drive. The regular 840 isn't quite as good.
The M4 is older but is a quality drive, but there's some firmware issues with the drives. Search the web before buying one.
Intel makes great drives with great warranties. The 520 has a 5-year warranty!
Muskin, Kingston, Corsair, ADATA, etc all make decent Sandforce drives - make sure you get a drive that you can update the firmware on with your Mac if you don't have access to a Windows PC to do it with! Very important.

Even if you multiply all OCZ reviews by 3 to bring the # of reviews closer together, there are still more satisfied OCZ customer than NON and less OCZ customers that arent satsified vs Crucials.
But guess what? Not EVERYONE who bought these drives posted reviews, therefor is a HUGE discrepancy in data which makes this data null and void. Point being, you can't provide real data to backup your opinion.
Just because something is widely popular or even accepted isn't proof of its validity.
Please check yourself, Ive had;
- OCZ Vertex 60GB SSD
- OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD
- OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS 120GB SSD
- OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD
And 0 have failed. My original 2 x Vertex 60GBs are still running, years and hours later. So please adjust your propaganda to real, practical observations and feedback.
I agree the Samsung SSD are amazing, but better? Niether is better, its preference. Samsung has more better reputation because of people such as yourself.

OK, on the same subject, I'm thinking of mounting a SSD in the optical drive bay of my MBP 17" unibody, Mountain Lion.
Sounds like the Samsung drives win the beauty contest.

Does Mountain Lion still need TRIM enabler?
Since I'm keeping my original 720g/b HD, any feelings as to whether its most effective to keep the SSD as a separate system drive, or to join the two as a logical volume and let Fusion do its thing?
I'm after general speed-up rather than anything specialised. My feeling is that a 128G SSD would do the trick for Fusion, but with separate volumes I'd probably spring for 256GB so I didn't have to be too choosy about what to put on it.
Anybody tried this combo? - YES lots of people.
Does Mountain Lion still need TRIM enabler? - Need, no. I recommend turning it on via TrimEnabler App however.

Good Amazon ratings do not mean a product is good. I've shown you the return rates on OCZ products before. Worst in the industry.
Want to play the ratings game: 52% of the reviews for the Vertex 4 512MB are either 1-2 stars on Newegg.

Seems like you just have a personal vendetta against OCZ lol, and I can respect that. I hate OWC and am the same way, Ill bash them any chance I get.
Ive just never had an OCZ SSD fail or had issues with their CS, so I like them.

I've been using a 512 gig Crucial M4 for about a year and have no complaints. Not the fastest on the planet but VERY sufficient for my needs.
I like both the OCZ Vertex 4 and OCZ Vector, they are both fast drives with good controllers.
I highly recommend OCZ since I have NEVER had issues with any of the SSDs I have bought. I really like Samsung 840 Series too, both Pro and Non.
