Good video converter?

I went ahead and got Toast Titanium thinking I'd be able to make some DVD discs with a bunch of AVI video I have...turns out its not able to and it requires some type of codec?!

I guess it needs to be mpg is there any good video converters out there for Mac, to where I won't lose quality for it?

Another vote for Handbrake. Does its job perfectly and at no cost.
