I had following reply from Cruical support regarding pricing of pairs and individual modules:

Individual modules and kits are classed as parts in their own right and are priced accordingly. Generally the kit part will be priced similarly to the price of the individual parts that make up the kits. For example, 1 module 10.99, kit of 2 modules 21.99. However there are times when the difference is slightly more.

The reason we offer kits is that these are guaranteed to be a matching pair from the same batch, this helps for running memory in dual channel systems. If you buy individual modules they might not be from the same batch.

Also under the warranty the full kit is covered, so if one module was to develop a fault we will exchange the full kit for another matching pair. If the modules are bought individually we would replace the faulty module.

Just to let you know that Crucial UK now have the 16gb kit back in stock again. I have just ordered a kit ready for my iMac delivery, whenever that may be. Don't forget to go through Quidco and get a further 7% cashback.

Good luck.

Next question, do I really need 32GB

If the iMac comes with 8GB as standard will that come out ? What do people do with it ?

I always used Kingston and, touch wood, never had problems with it.

So I got four of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0089MTON0 waiting for my new 27" iMac

Me too, but then I didn't order my 27" iMac until about a week after launch, so I will probably not get it until mid January. I ordered it through a friends business to get the discount, and have no way of knowing what my order status is. God this is so frustrating, I WANT IT NOW, ARRRGGHHHH !!!

Don't think there will be too many people who genuinely need 32GB - I've been running on the stock 8GB since mine arrived, and the only time it's needed to page out is when I'm running a VM. In normal use, 8's just fine.

But RAM's comparatively cheap at the moment, and I do need to fire up Windows occasionally - 32GB will mean I don't have to worry about that impacting on the OS X memory needs. In my case definitely a case of want over need, though.

If you ask me, this maxing out of imacs is a bit of a vanity game for 90% of us. Ive just upped mine to 32gb and there is no way i will ever need so much! Oh well, another 120 in the bag for crucial UK i suppose!!

The bigger question is what i should do with the two 4gb OEM chips ive just taken out. Is there a second hand market for this stuff? I looked on ebay and most of it was buy it now. Should i just list it do u think?

Quite frankly, if I hadn't ordered 16GB myself, I would have bought them off you because I am keeping my stock 8s and adding the 16s to get to 24 (right?) but I probably don't need more than 16 as don't need to run bootcamp. But my advice to you would be to sell them on amazon (find the precise spec and click on Sell yours on the RHS). Much better type of person buys from amazon than eBay IMHO. But only if you get at least 25 for them. Otherwise just keep them in case you need to send the machine in for repairs or need to return it
