Mid 2010 MacBook Pro Faulty Intel Graphics?

This is a known issue with gfxcardstatus. There is an entire thread over on codys website talking about the issue. Disable or uninstall gfxcardstatus and your issue should be resolved.

The issue that the OP was having and the issue with v2.2.1 of gfxCardStatus are unrelated. That being said, many of the same MacBook Pros are affected by the issue (almost exclusively 15" models from 2010).

Stick to Dynamic Switching for now, and you won't see the garbled screen issue. Switching to Integrated Only is what triggers the problem. There's a fix coming out in v2.3 shortly.

I've installed gfxCardStatus and set it to "Discrete Only".

I'll report back here if i still get any errors.

If you were seeing that without gfxCardStatus installed, I'd definitely call AppleCare and mention this support article to them: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

They've been replacing logic boards in machines behaving like that for free.

I have to take a huge backup tho, it's gonna take like a week or two to get this fix'd...

Its really disheartening that Apple is having so much trouble with GPU failures.

Same problem - 15" MacBook Pro screen breaks up into squares about 1". I have about 1 month of Applecare left, so I wonder what I should do. The comments here indicate that replacing the motherboard will not solve the problem. Any suggestions?

i have been experiencing the same problem with my mid 2010 i5 15" macbook pro. One year ago graphics related kernel panics with -> logic board replacement. two weeks ago the same pixel-problems as in the screenshots you have posted above, occurring during video conferences, video streaming, youtube, but also the new-tab-top-sites problem in safari as well as black facebook site after switching back to the facebook tab from another in safari.
They have replaced the logicboard again, which didn't solve anything. Now I switched to another service center and the logicboard is being replaced for the third time incl. RAM. I am really annoyed since I need my MBP for work, it has been in maintenance for 8 weeks within a year now and to be honest - apple products are really not the cheapest and therefore I expect them at least to be reliable. Anyone with a real solution here?

If there is no customer-satisfying solution here possible for me, I a.o.th. will have to say, never ever Apple anymore. It just cannot be that this seems to be an issue so many experience and there does not seem to be any solution offered, that really fixes the problem, talking about a product from Apple.
