At the MAMP forum, someone asked an interesting question, but no answer. Any opinions here?
I find the MAMP project interesting, but the main question that immediately came to mind isn't answered anywhere in the FAQs or here in the forum (AFAI can tell from a quick search):
Why should I use MAMP versus the Mac OS built-in software?
Every installation of Mac OS X comes with Apache, MySQL and PHP pre-installed by Apple. On my old 10.5.8 PPC machine, the 5.2 branch is even newer (5.2.14) than MAMPs (5.2.13). Of course, Apple doesn't supply pretty GUI config tools and even activating PHP is more hands-on than apparently with MAMP. But is that all? If so, wouldn't it have been enough to make a nice GUI app to manage the built-in software?
I'm not dissing MAMP at all, but I think it's a valid question and a comparison of the two would be nice on the main project site.
