Blu-ray iTunes Digital Copies Now Redeemable in HD?

The LotR digital copies do in fact come with Extras. In fact, I'd say it's a pretty rare exception that any digital copies (even those that come on disc) would not come with Extras. If you didn't get the Extras the first time you downloaded, it might have been because either the disc was required or Extras weren't available on that movie when you first downloaded. If the iTunes version of the same movie (has to be the same exact version) has Extras, try deleting your copy and redownloading from iTunes in the Cloud via the Purchases section in iTunes. I've had this work on pretty much every iTunes movie I've got via digital copy code (out of about 30 that actually have Extras in the iTunes store). Several didn't have Extras when first downloaded, but then Apple added Extras later on (which has happened a year after release or more).

The other nice benefit of iTunes in the Cloud is that you can also get any updates to the movie encode when Apple updates the file. Again, as long as it's the same exact movie in the catalog, you will receive any updates Apple makes into the future. This benefit usually comes when older movies with sloppy HD encodes get anniversary updates on blu-ray and the studio sends Apple a much improved version of the movie to replace the old version.

One example of that is iTunes emailed me a month or two ago saying that Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition has a new version with fixed subtitles - and yes the anniversary additions are another instance this happens.

The brand new single releases have HD Digital Copies. The DCs in the trilogy that was released a little while back redeem in SD.

Are those SD upgradeable or they stay SD because at the time of redeeming, digital copy was still SD-only?

The USA version of A Monster in Paris is an oddball.

The digital copy is redeemed from www.shoutfactory.com.

There are 2 downloads available for iOS, 1 SD and 1 HD. They are straight downloads, not redeemed via iTunes in any way.

The latest release of Jurassic Park blu ray comes with HD iTunes and extras.

I bought my first ever blu ray disc Jurassic Park and was pleasantly surprised. (Also with ultraviolet) Sadly iTunes extra doesn't have all the contents that blu ray offered, lacking the all new behind the scene doc for some reason, which made me buy blu ray instead of iTunes. (+ a $39 blur ray drive for my mac)

My movie viewing is mostly Netflix stream/renting + iTunes purchase, and was never going to bother with blu ray but for the films I really care I guess blu ray has the upper hand. To have an iTunes cloud library of blu ray collection is just great, and I hope all blu ray discs would offer iTunes HD version. I hope the information accumulated here could grow into a well documented wiki page of some sort.

iTunes HD and Extras. Extras don't have come with all the documentaries that blu ray has though.

Bought Schindler's List here in the UK from work last night. Redeems in HD in iTunes.

Picked up Inception bluray at Costco for $12, didn't expect anything but a BD disc but inside the package was DVD and an iTunes code.

It said "Digital copy offer expires May 06, 2011", but I tried anyway and it still worked and I got an SD version in my iTunes. Better than nothing.

I just hope that Apple would allow SD to HD upgrade with fee. (That and 'rent to purchase' upgrade.) That'd make people buy and upgrade more I think.

This is what I want to know as my Digital Copies are SD. I notice when I'm on the iPad and I select iTunes in the cloud, it shows me the HD versions of my Digital Copies. I will attempt to download a file and see if it gives me the HD copy and attempt to transfer it to iTunes by syncing to my desktop.

Unless, of course, you guys have an easier way of getting the Digital Copies to re-download in HD.
