Snow Leopard vs Mountain Lion
This is an old discussion, I know, yet I think it may still be helpful for those of us who are not keen on running after the latest OS version and also prefer investing their money in other things than continuously buying new hardware.
So, since some pieces of software are currently losing the support by my glorious Snow Leopard , I tried to install a copy of Os X 10.8 Mountain Lion on a separate partition (I also tried Yosemite just for getting rid of its bloatware and it awful Linux-like font rendering after 10 minutes!).
Here are some measurement, based on my 2GB RAM 2.4 GHZ Core Duo iMac.
BOOT TIME
10.6 Snow Leopard: 32 secs
10.8 Mountain Lion: 44 secs
FIREFOX LAUNCH

Even if these aren't of course "scientific" benchmarks, they confirm IMO what every mac user suspects: OS X versions performance on older machines are getting worse and worse from version to version, so if you don't need to run any application that works only on the earlier OS versions, you'd probably better hang on to your old Snow Leopard.
