Final Cut Express

Why are the transitions in Final Cut Express sometimes too short? I can't seem to make them longer.

Have not worked with FCE. Could be you have not got enough video at beginning.
Take the clip you have trouble with and insert a longer version of that clip and insert the transition and see what result you get.

Usually it comes from not having enough frames before or after the cut for the transition to use to occur.

Normally one is warned before hand if not enough frames to carry out the requested task.
