Another factor to consider is that mobile operators are still rethinking their pricing models, partly because of the rise of low-cost MVNOs such as StraightTalk. It's possible that by the time the 5S or 6 comes out, there will be some great new rate plans out there. Unless you pay full price now for a 5, or if you don't mind paying an ETF, you wouldn't be able to take advantage of any new plans until early 2015.
