Favorite Verse, or Saying, Christian or Otherwise

So, whatever religion you practice, or believe in what verse, verses, sayings, or qoutes are your favorites?

There is one that I seem to always go back to, I had it on a poster 25 years ago and really find it part of the foundation of my Christian faith. It along with John 3:16 pretty much some it up for me.

It is Psalm 27:1-6, although I like the whole thing. It is the first thing I read in the Marriott in Memphis on Sept 11th, 2001-tv blaring in my hotel room. It was amazing how it affected me at the time.

Psalm 27

Quote:
The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

27The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2*When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came [1] upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. 3*Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. 4*One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty [2] of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. 5*For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. 6*And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; [3] I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.
And of course for those of you who see John3:16 at everysports event and have never read it....

John 3:16
Quote:
God So Loved the World

16*For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Galatians 5.13--5: "For you have been called to live in freedom--not freedom to satisfy your sinful nature, but freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: 'love your neighbor as yourself.' But if instead of showing love you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another."

That one has really helped me over the past month deal with some problems I've had with a friend of mine. It's helped me remember that whatever somebody does to me, it's my job to serve others in love. It also helps me out dealing with the day-to-day issues you can have living in a house with fifty other Christian guys.

I Corinthians 7.30--1: "Happiness or sadness or wealth should not keep anyone from doing God's work. Those in frequent contact with the things of the world should make good use of them without becoming attached to them, for this world and all it contains will pass away."

That's another favorite of mine. It helps me to be content with the things I have, and to remember that there's not really all that much I actually need in life. It also helps me to take pride in taking good care of my belongings, because I know that I don't need all that much. For example, a few months ago I bought a nice set of four 14.5-oz. glasses for about $7. I really take good care of those--wash them by hand and everything. I do that because I like the little things I have that are nice. And I let other people use them whenever they want, because I don't really need them in the slightest.

With final grades soon to come out at my university and exams happening at others, this Gore Vidal quote seems particularly appropriate:

It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.

Ah, words to live by.

Those who are willing to give up freedoms for the promise of temporary perceived safety, deserve neither.

Almost forgot my favorite:

A few I enjoy:

"The good geographer is a philosopher." - Carleton Coon

"Strife is the origin of everything." - Heraclitus

"The life of the future trembled behind all that silence. Mad humanity, which nothing could free it self!" - Andre Malraux

" The double charms of love and wine
Alike from one sweet source arise:
Are we to blame, shale we repine?
When unconstrain'd the passions rise?" - Hafiz

well, I must chime in, at the jokes when they are so bad
And the jokes they’re always bad
But they’re not as bad as this.
