Hi all.

I'm new here and noticed, that you've already talked putting the MacBook Pro in RAID with two SSD's. It's been reported to be successful but:

  1. You end up losing Boot Camp (or you'll have to partition the drive so that you don't)
  2. You're in huge risk of losing all data and thus you should keep using Time Machine/similar constantly
  3. It works with certain drives
  4. It works with certain EFI

Now I'm asking if you, the users who've done this, could you please provide me with more info about these factors?

  1. Which MacBook (Pro) do you own (e.g. mid-2009)
  2. Which EFI are you running (this one can be hard, I don't really know how to find out what EFI you're running)
  3. Which SSD's are you using
  4. What's the detailed name of the SSD's (e.g. Intel X25-M G2)
  5. How is your performance? Are you getting all power you should get from the software-RAID or only a part of it (as some users reported)
  6. Any (other) problems with RAID (even the mentioned ones, I need to be specific here)?

I didn't find these yet and I'm struggling to get any decent info about those. If I could get those details from every poster, that has done the mod, I'd be really grateful. I, along some other users from another forum, are considering doing this but can't, since the details are not out there.

Here's the old threads, what I used for reference (not a single post from 2010 to confirm that the RAID does indeed work now, sadly).

- (Dual Raid in New Macbook Pro) Anyone done it?
- Striped (RAID 0) SSDs using 2x Intel X-25M Gen2 160GB (SSDSA2MH160G2C1) in 17" uMBP
- Dual SSD RAID 0 in MacBook Pro

Thanks in advance. :)

PS: As a bonus I'd like to know, if possible, that can you reflash the SSD if you're doing this after purchasing the first drive and then installing, much later, the second one to the computer? Since OS X doesn't support TRIM (yet) I'd rather flash my drive and then RAID those SSD's to RAID 0. If you want, you can also provide instructions to use Boot Camp with RAID 0, I'll be sure to thank you all and post all the details to the another forum. Yes, you'll all get credited. :)

I'm subscribing to this thread.

One interesting point. You could partition the two drives and span one set with RAID 0 and the other with RAID 1 to get reliability and performance. Of course, the RAID 1 drive will require 2x the real disk space and be slower at writes. Both drives would be near 2x for read performance though.

I have some information:

The raid mode in macbook pros is software raid, this means:

· Boot up times are the same as single raid configuration, because the raid software has to load with osx to start working. But when it loads, it is extremely fast.
· You can make bootcamp, but not in raid. You have to leave some space a part of the raid partition to the windows partition. So if your drives have the same space, you have to leave the same space in both drives for windows.
· I've read some people that couldn't make it to work with 2010 macbook pros, but other people could without any problem.
· Raid software uses some cpu load for working.
