How is battery life affected if screen is always on? [ 5th gen nano ]

Has anyone found any stats on how battery life is affected if the energy saver feature is not turned on ? Obviously the battery life is shortened, but by how much ? The thing that got me thinking is the wrist watch that some are turning the 6 th gen into.
