Is there any way an iPad can be backed up to an external hard drive?

Any chance the answer to this question has changed in the last couple of months?

I'm looking to do some extended traveling in the near future with nothing but my iPad. Since it will be several weeks, maybe months between syncs, I would really like to be able to back it up once in awhile.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to backup to a flash drive through the camera connection kit....what are the odds?

Afraid the odds are astronomical. You can't backup the device fully, other then through iTunes.
