Not booting from dvd

I have a mac book running snow leopard. I am trying to boot from leopard dvd to install a backup os to a usb drive. The system tries to boot from the dvd but never gets past the "waiting" stage even after hours. Any ideas?

Is that "Leopard DVD" the one that came with your MacBook or is it a Retail version of Mac OS X or is it a Restore DVD from another Mac?

Have you verified the DVD via Disk Utility while booted into Mac OS X 10.6? Why don't you use the 10.6 DVD?
