Powerbook Upgrade

Since I've heard (over at thinksecret, as I recall) the new powerbook is the exact same hardware, though with a small increase in CPU speed. As I've got the 1.5Ghz Powerbook, I was wondering: how would it be possible to upgrade it to 1.67Ghz? It couldn't be that hard I figured, as the hardware configuration on the new seems to be the exact same... Any thoughts? I can't be the same who doesn't want to shell out for an entirely new powerbook just to gain a small bit of performance...

I think what I could gain would be worth it, because almost any game I run is CPU limited.

You probably won't notice a 170MHz bump. Also the only way to overclock a mac is to solder the logic board. You're on your own on figuring out what to remove. I don't think it's worth it.

The question is if there is any difference with the CPU/cooling system at all, or apple just overclocked the old 1.5Ghz systems. Also, I've seen companies selling/applying upgrades for older powerbook systems. I don't see that anything should be in the way for these companies to upgrade to do 1.67Ghz upgrades?

Hey, if a 170mhz bump gave me an extra 3-4 FPS in world of warcraft, then I'm all for it. It would mean a huge difference around the current level my FPS (10-25)...

like i say it wont make much off a difference, feel free to bork your mac. but i advise against i, and very strongly at that

just see what actually happens tomoz because i for one cant see steve getting up there and saying WOW, we have bumped the powebooks from 1.5-1.66 its so great

plus you say upgrade it, what do you mean?

maybe just buy a new one (no point for the money)...

maxing ram would get you about the same performance as that speed bump im guessing

your expecting a 5fps bump by upgrading the pro by 170mhz

I have a Sawtooth 400/20gb/128mb

At this point, a 1.5ghz 12" laptop with a DVI port in the back for my 15" Studio Display makes my mouth water. i just KNOW in my heart of hearts that G5 laptops will be out before the end of this year, but I really can't wait that much longer.

I could be wrong, but I think you're more GPU limited. If you play WoW, I think we all would be better off if they allowed a GPU upgrade from the JUNK 5200 to a ati 9700 128mb card. I think they only reason why Apple didn't do this is because they are cheap on ram. Why show 128mb in vid ram and give customers 256mb of regular ram. They would have to bump up the basic ram to like 512mb to compete better. Now they just raised the price of the PB by $100 and when you add in the name APPLE, you increased the price by $300. And I don't think Apple would want to make it cost that much.
