Wireless Network Alternatives

I've been looking to buy an Airport Base Station for a while now, but the price seems a little too high. I've seen a lot other Wireless gateways much cheaper, but I'm not sure if they will work with my iBook and an apple Airport card.
Do you guys have any recommendations/comments on what to get?
