Mac OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H574 Seeded to Developers

Apple continues to work on Mac OS X 10.6.5, issuing a new version known as Build 10H574 to developers today. Just this past Friday, Apple pushed out Build 10H571, with the build of increment of three since that time suggesting that Apple's engineers have likely been working through the weekend to prepare for a public release. No details on changes included in the latest build have yet been revealed.

The public release of Mac OS X 10.6.5 is expected to come nearly simultaneously with a release of iOS 4.2, as Mac OS X 10.6.5 is required to support certain aspects of the AirPrint functionality coming in iOS 4.2. The golden master of iOS 4.2 was issued to developers one week ago and is likely simply awaiting finalization of Mac OS X 10.6.5 before release.

Notably, Apple has already seeded its first developer build of Mac OS X 10.6.6 with hints that that version will be required for support of Apple's forthcoming Mac App Store. The early developer seed of Mac OS X 10.6.6 and the small file size (3.7 MB) suggest it will see only minor changes and may follow closely on the heels of Mac OS X 10.6.5.

Seems like Apple wants to get this near-perfect before release.

Better hurry up. Seems like this is holding up 4.2.

Seems very strange to keep working away at 10.6.5 when 10.6.6 is already out to developers.

Hopefully this will come soon followed closely by iTunes 10.1 and iOS 4.2.

Wow I wonder what's up with these builds that they have no known issues, yet they keep on coming!

Can't wait till we get 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 so I can actually see AirPrint in action!

im guessing 10.6.5 tomorrow, followed by 4.2 and itunes 10.1 wednesday so apples servers aren't overloaded with downloads all in one day. or else download speeds will be slow as hell.

EDIT: Just in case anyone was wondering, i counted and this the 12th beta of 10.6.5.

Can anyone explain the versioning system for the developer seeds? Does the amount of bug fixes determine how much higher the build number gets between releases?

I bet 10.6.6 comes out fairly quick compared to 10.6.5

A week maybe?

Just got a developer notification from Apple to "Get your apps ready for iOS 4.2" - for 4.1, it was 7 days later after receiving a similar e-mail that the update went live.

10 - version of Darwin, started at 1 for the initial release of NextStep. 10.7 Lion will be 11.
H - version identifier. This normally goes up each minor rev, though 10.6.4 shows an F, so G is likely a one off build for the new Air notebooks.
574 - Build number of OS X 10.6. The build number is incremented when the release team at Apple compiles everything into a new release, usually a nightly operation. 574 total builds of 10.6 have now been made. 10.6.0 was 432, so there were 431 prerelease builds of some sort, most remaining internal.

The number of bugs don't really impact the build number directly, since on one day 10 bug fixes may go in, then the next only 2. Either way, the build number will only tick up by 1 that night when the full process is started.

For a little insight into how these release process occur for an OS, watch this video from Microsoft. They made this to show the daily cycle for Windows NT 5.0 (later renamed Windows 2000). The process is likely similar with Apple, though far less compatibility testing has to be run.

Why is MR posting so many of these updates in front page news each time they are released? 10.6.5 will be here when it gets here.

It would be foolish for Apple to rush this update.

Take your time, get it right.

Prediction:

1. OS 10.6.5 releases LATER THIS WEEK, not tomorrow. Too quick to turn around a new beta from today to release tomorrow, give it at least 48-72 hours.

2. iTunes 10.1 releases LATER THIS WEEK.

3. AppleTV 2 receives an update LATER THIS WEEK.

3. OS 4.2 releases NEXT TUESDAY, NOV 16. This will have allowed a reasonable number of people to get the above updates over the weekend, all of which are needed for the full OS 4.2 experience.

I see almost no way OS 4.2 arrives tomorrow unless Apple is in the business of releasing a new OS X seed on Monday and then releasing the final version to the public the next day along with a new iTunes, new Apple TV update AND a major, major OS update to their premiere holiday products all at the same time.

That won't happen.

Thanks so much!

So by minor revision do you mean the point updates (10.6.x)?

And does a new version truly get compiled every night or are there days when no bug fixes or optimizations actually go in?
