phantom email in mail.app?

so, mail has become convinced that i have two messages in my gmail inbox that are not there. I was wondering one of two things:
1) is this something i should wait out, or should i try to trash the preferences file (if so, can somoene point me to a reminder)
2) Has anyone else encountered this odd issue?
