Mac OS X 10.6.5 Addresses Display Issues on New MacBook Air

Earlier this month, we reported on several issues related to the display on Apple's new MacBook Air, with flickering and fading upon waking from sleep being the most common symptoms. Just a few days later, it was revealed that Apple support was aware of the issues and was planning on releasing a software update to address them.

Based on a new support document posted today, Mac OS X 10.6.5, which was released last week, does indeed include the fixes designed to address these video anomalies.
Symptoms
After waking from sleep, your MacBook Air display may flicker or fade from light to dark repeatedly.

Resolution
Download and apply the Mac OS X v10.6.5 update to resolve this issue.

We've yet to hear from MacBook Air users who had been experiencing the problem about whether the update has in fact cured their video issues, but Apple appears confident that it has indeed solved the problem.

I still have occasional problems where my 11" MBA doesn't turn on when opened... you still need to hit a key to turn it on. This behavior comes and goes depending on if the MBA was on battery power or AC power when it was rebooted or started from being completely off.
 
I had this problem, today, on my brand new (1 week old) Mac Book Pro 15" Core i7. Sadly, I have 10.6.5 already. So I have my concerns...

Same here. 13" MBA. Also have issues with AirPort Express Connection. It drops from time to time. Signal is full (they are 3 feet apart).

Are you sure that this is unique to the MBA? I have to do this rather frequently on my MBP 1,1. It's done it since I bought it and it ran Tiger. I've never really thought too much of it until now.

Well, as the topic says - 10.6.5 fixed this for the new MacBook Air. Not Pro. So I'd take my 1-week-old MBP into a Genius Bar ASAP if it was doing wonky display things.

The one that people aren't talking about and the one I returned my MBA to get another one was the...waking up from sleep and your backlight doesn't work. That was tried on both version of OSX and still failed.

...your move apple.

Might be a faulty wireless card. Take it to the apple store.

This is another problem, the fix Apple is talking about concerns flickering only, no mention about not waking up from sleep:

Have both purchased the Cinema display 27" and the Macbook Air 11 "ultimate" and have zero issues with both. I used them more both more then 10 hours a day.

Does Apple actually do any testing on their gear?????? This is an issue that should not be seen on a production model. Apple QC and R&D have in the past few years taken a back seat it seems.

Never known any other notebook ever to have the petty display issues and bugs that seem to hound Apples hardware at the moment. Even my Dell Inspiron 5100 from 2003 still works a dream and no issues to date. Get a grip SJ, it would seem around the Apple Campus that even Mickey Mouse wears an Apple watch.....

Not to defend Apple,

But speaking from own experience, Apple did a very good job with the new MBA. The thing never got hot, fan's are silent. This is nothing compared to the first gen. MBA which was really flawed in so many ways.

I don't deny there are people out with issues, and maybe I get the same issues when mine getting older (knock on the wood) but right not it feels like a good designed product. And well if this issue is solved with a software update a few weeks after release, I think Apple did a pretty good job.

Bas,

I totally agree its a well designed product, a real advance in technology and is great to look at. Ill say that I would love one but its frustrating to read that so may Apple products are increasingly having issues. I think whats annoying is the high premium that is paid fro the products.

Cant fault them though they have released the SW update to resolve but IMO this shouldnt be an issue. Intensive R&D and testing would have flagged this problem way before production.
