Ok so my Apple TV has the 4.1 update and I just updated my iPhone 4 to 4.2.

On my iPhone 4 in the Photos app I can see the airplay icon for photos but when I get to a video it disappears. Can it not play videos recorded on the iPhone 4?

Honestly this was one of the main reasons that I was excited about airplay, I could shoot some video somewhere then without using a computer or sync cable view it wirelessly on my TV, but for whatever reason it is not implemented.

Looks like its going to have to wait till 4.3

I asked the same question at discussions.apple.com and it looks like this is not supported. I'm with you though, it was one of the big things I was excited about. Honestly, who cares if you can stream stuff from your videos on the iPhone that was synced from iTunes. Those videos are already accessible on Apple TV because it can play anything in iTunes via Home Sharing. What a stupid choice to not stream videos recorded with an iPhone. Maybe a jb app for the iPhone will come out that will let you stream anything.

If this is true and there is no way to play videos from your camera roll, I'm seriously disappointed as this was the main thing I was excited about when I bought the ATV2. I sure hope I'm just missing something and there is a workaround.

I'm completely baffled as to why this would be missing. I'm sure that the vast majority were like me the second they found out about airplay "cool, I can shoot a video and play it immediately over the air". I can't for the life of me figure out why they would not support it.

I am on hold with Apple Techical support to ask about this issue now, to see if there is a workaround, or if it was intentionally left out. I will post updates later but wouldn't hold my breath. The technician actually asked me what airplay was, if it was an app I had downloaded from the AppStore.

UPDATE:
I had to tell him to just forget about it as apparently I know more about Apple products than he does. His big advice after putting me on hold, was to delete the AirPlay app from my iPhone, and try and redownload it and see if that made a difference.

I just rewatched the Steve Jobs keynote introducing AirPlay and he didn't promise recorded iPhone 4 video to AppleTV via Airplay, I thought he had. Still I am, stunned, stunned this isn't there... it is why I bought 3 AppleTVs.

Would you mind posting a link to that video, along with the time that he promises this?

Well, I thought it was just me but I guess not. HUGE oversight on Apple's part if it cannot stream video's recorded from the phone. I've been playing with this thing for 10 minutes trying to figure out where the Airplay setting is for video. Sigh......

And Apple, the home porno implications alone are mind boggling for iphone video over airplay to the big screen tv! I can't believe you missed this opportunity... just kiddin'... :p

someone posted on the iphone forum that if you play a video from the camera roll, then double click and slide over on the bottom panel, there's an airplay icon next to the volume slider. It's not working for me, but something seems to be seriously hosed with my update since its real hit or miss on anything working. Worth a try.

Yep, saw that as well after I posted previously. Gave it a try and it's not working for me either. I've entered the password I setup on the ATV2 and no go. It seems like it tries to connect and then gives up. Maybe I'll have to reboot everything and see but I'll have to try that later. Cheers!

Apple has released a video explaining airplay. It is posted on TUAW if you would like to watch. Anyways, it shows people using it for videos synced with itunes, photos and slideshows of photos, and music, but leaves out videos recorded with the iphone. Looking more and more like it was intended to be left out.

Oh my that is so incredibly lame. I mostly go to my Plex equipped Mini and basically carved Itunes video out of my life-- but was really looking forward to having my iPhone pics AND VIDEO streamable before they pass through iLife or onto my Mini. Uggh. Geezus that is lame.

Eyyy ya bullocks!! I hoped it was just me having problems sorting this thing out!!! :-(

What in heavens name... It makes absolutely NO sense to me, to leave recorded and edited videos out of Airplay! Absolutely No ****in reason!!! This thing was actually the one thing I was looking most forward to, when I bought my ATV!... Shoot, edit and show on my 40" flatscreen!

Disapointed would be an grose understatement!

I only have an Airport Express but from what I've found/heard that is the system wide AirPlay sound setting. You can even stream game audio (lags about 2 sec).

workaround iphone video

Apparently there is no way to stream Iphone4 videos to your appletv. I've found a somewhat silly workaround:
(Private) upload video to youtube and then stream video with IPhone/iPad from your youtube account to your Appletv.
It is unbelievable that there is no standard support for streaming this videos and thus a big mistake from Apple at this point.

Wow. I coulda swore Steve said you would be able to do this.

Lets hope we are all just dumb and can't figure out how to do it. How about a work around? Could a third party app, hypothetically import video and allow for AirPlay?

There are jb apps out now that let you mirror the entire screen to a tv using video cables. Theoretically they could update it to mirror the screen using airplay. At least i would think so
