SIM swap iPhone4 & iPad

For the first time, I swapped the SIM out of my iPhone into my iPad. A day later, I got a text message stating "Did you know you need an eligible data plan for your iPad? Call 611......"

Anyone else experience this? If so, what happened? Were you charged for the data plan? Nothing?

Thanks, but I wasn't asking about compatibility. It worked, and I was able to use my iPhone 4 data plan. Just had to adjust APN settings from broadband to phone settings. Yes, the two are compatible as in the SIM card technology is the same.

I was just wondering for those that also have tried this, if they similarly got the text from AT&T noticing that the device was accessing their service.
 
Though not exactly the same, someone a few messages down reported that their data plan was blocked after they used the SIM in the iPad. Maybe AT&T has been cracking down on this recently.
 
I can verify that AT&T does now monitor this and discontinue your service. While I was able to call them up and get them to re-establish, I got the "shame on you" speech from the rep, who kindly offered to sell me the iPad data plan.

I'll just stick to MiWi. Lesson learned. :)
 
Yeah they recently reconfigured the system to Flag iPad IEMIs that are connecting with "smartphone" plans (that's how the system look at it), so that a human can review it and take action.

I guess it makes sense they do that, but I don't really understand why. I thought one of the advantages with GSM is that it didn't matter what device you used your SIM card in, that it "just works." It's not like the iPad is even that different from an iPhone in its capabilities. If someone is on one of their new metered plans I would think it would matter even less to them.

it works... there is not technical or technological limitation, it is just business, the "Data Plan" you got on your phone is for your phone, They want you to have 2 "Data Plans" (same happen if you put your SIM into another phone, if it is a BlackBerry, you need to get the BB plan, if it is a Non-smartphone, you need to get the Non-smartphone plan, and so on.)

It is all about Money as always! ;)

I have two data plans, and this really pisses me off. The iPad has 250MB, and the iPhone 2GB. The iPad limit is fine most months, but goes over when I am on the road. I've never exceeded 300MB on the iPhone in a month.

Paying an extra $15 for the iPad is just an insult. If the iPhone plan was unlimited, I could understand the argument, but this is a pain in the butt...
 
this happened to me yesterday, i tried my iP4 sim in my iPad and it worked fine but 2 hours later i got the dreaded email/text saying no no no. it really is ridiculous, only 1 device will work at a time so it's not like your cheating AT&T.

i told the AT&T rep i would throw my iPad in my pool b4 i paid them for another data plan. they are truly GREEDY BASTARDS !

Well, you're in luck,

The new AT&T tethering plan will be 4GB total (phone and tethering) and use of the WiFi Hotspot for $45/month
