DVD required to install iWork

Is Jobs on crack? I noticed today that a DVD drive is required to install iWork. I see lots of real unhappy people when it arrives.

iLife does NOT require a DVD drive (except Garageband and iDVD).

What about computers that aren't new? I have a PowerMac G4 867MHz that is well above the minimum requirements, but only has a CD-RW drive built in. I'm sure there are plenty of other Macs out there in this situation.
 
I have a DVD drive on all of my home computers, but I know many people who don't. If you ask me, this "DVD-only" approach will result in people ripping the DVDs and burning CDs for their friends who don't have DVD drives. You know what that means... illegal sharing. 🙁 Apple could be making $$ each time someone copies it. Instead, people who would normally buy the CD version will instead be getting copies from their friends.

shoulded added at this point in time 🙄

maybe they'll add a CD version if there are enough complaints....
 
The .pgk files are small enough to fit on a CD, so unless the retail version has additional content, I have no idea why it would be on a DVD.

If you dont have a DVD drive, just find somebody who does and burn a CD 😉

Straight off the Apple Edu Store:

iWork ‘05 System Requirements
- Macintosh computer with a 500 mhz or faster Power PC G3, G4 or G5 (G4 for PowerBook); G4 or G5 recommended
- 128 MB of physical RAM (512MB recommended)
- 8 MB of video memory (32MB recommended)
- Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later
- QuickTime 6.5 or later
- iLife ’04 or later recommended
- 1GB of available disk space
- Display with 1024 by 768 pixel resolution or better recommended
- DVD drive required for install (CD version available separately)

I didn't notice this on the non-edu store, but I'm sure it's the same deal.

Ooh, nice catch.

While we're on the subject though, I actually have a friend that doesn't even have a CD-Burner! 😱 It's just a reader... And 16x at that! 😉 🙄

Do they have FireWire? There's always external drives you can add on.

Nope, and USB 1.1 😱

And believe it or not, this guy's a computer freak. Likes programming and what-not. I don't know how he does it... Massive amounts of patience 😉 🙄
 
well its either 1 dvd or like 6 cds, and theyre not alienating that many people because the combo is standard on most machines withing the sys reqs.
 
Actually, you can buy a brand new Mac without a DVD or Combo drive... the edu only edition of the iBook has a CD-ROM only. There was an eMac that shipped that way recently (edu only model) but not sure if that one is still available. The edu only iMac model has NO optical drive, so they're SOL too.
