WiFi connects for laptops but not for iPhone. Reason?

My Macbook Pro and Dell computer both connect
to my WiFi no problem.

So does my iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Problem is,
even though both those devices accept the passcode
and a WiFi signal is shown in the display, once you
connect to the Internet a pop-up note comes up saying
there is no Internet connection.

At the same time, I can surf the net wirelessly on
the laptops.

Is there any reason why the WiFi works perfectly for
my laptops but not my iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone?

Thanks

iPhone needs 2.4 Ghz n, not 5 Ghz.

What kind of wireless network (a/b/g/n) do you have? The iPhone and iPod touch require the 2.4 GHz 802.11n.

Right now I have a Verizon Fios Adaptec
router. I believe it is an older G router.

The iPod, iPad and iPhone previously connected
to it perfectly.

However, I made some changes recently.
I changed the passcode on the Verizon router
to a 5 character security password so it would
communicate with an Airport Extreme Base Station
plugged into a powerline on another level. Basically
the AEBS is acting as a repeater on the same
network. It is my understanding that both routers
will only talk to each other if the passcode is 5
characters long. This is because of the difference
in how both routers decode that password.

All worked fine initially.

Now my Macbook and Dell Laptop still connect
and I can surf with no problem but the handheld
devices, while able to connect to the network,
will not acknowledge the signal they are receiving.

I did unplug the main Verizon router and reboot.
Did not help the situation.

what ip's do the handhelds have? i find that sometimes my idevices pick up a strange ip not handed out by the router. it connects to the LAN, but cannot acquire a DNS address and will not connect to the internet.

try forgetting your network on both devices and re-inputting them.

I actually reset the networks on all three
devices and let them reconnect.

Still having the same problem that they
recognize there is WiFi, display the WiFi icon,
but when you bring up browser a message
says there is no Internet connection.

How ironic, I'm having the opposite problem. Want to swap?

so do the ip's on the handhelds "match" your other devices?

Mr Kram,

I am at work so I can't check. Will do
so first thing in the morning.

If by chance they don't, what would be
the solution?

i forget the network, reboot, re-establish the network. it then picks up the correct ip from the router.
