Macbook will not detect TV display

I just bought a cord(mini DVI to VGA) that connects my macbook to a VGA cable
and I even bought a brand new VGA cable as well to connect my Macbook to my tv.
My tv is a iSymphony
well I set it up on the channel that shows the VGA connection
and it only shows a purple screen saver
and nothing else

I tried turning my tv on first
then my macbook
so it could detect it
and it will not show anything else but the purple screen saver
I even unplug the cable from my macbook
and plugged it back in and it did not work

if anyone understand my rant and question please help me!.
