I was working on a movie project with imovie 4 when I got my hands on ilife05. I couldn't resist upgrading my imovie too, so I did. Everything was quite alright, but one audio clip changed its place after the update. it was an easy one to fix, but that shouldn't have happened anyway. I hope this update fixes that kind of things.

Just confirms my feelings that they rushed to get the new iLife out for MWSF. I still got it though.....

The new stuff is now in the hands of thousands... the perfect opportunity to catch and fix a few bugs before I install myself

I'm playing "wait and see" with iPhoto 05 in particular, even though I'm looking forward to the new slideshow effects. I've been playing with GarageBand 2 to keep myself patient!

Good lord - audio synchronization has been a problem since iMovie 2.0! (I've been using Final Cut ever since...) Oh well, better late than never...

Yeah, I guess Apple should apologize for not being perfect eh? I'm sorry for the sarcasm, but after using it for the past several days, I'd hardly call iLife '05 an unfinished product.

Well that was quick! I thought my copy of iLife may have turned up today but it looks like I'm in for a long weekend. Oh well, at least all the bugs are getting ironed out before I get it onto my system!

5+ hour project...

iMovie HD has been handling 5 1/2 hours of video in one project real well, and although my first impression (quick review when I installed it) found nothing significant to me added, in actual usage being able to cut/copy/paste between projects (was that there before!?) has been a Godsend. No crashes, but some major sluggishness. Sometimes it takes 10-15 seconds before it realizes I clicked on something, and that's on a 768MB 1.8Ghz iMac G5.

I have iLife '05, but I haven't used iMovie 5 (iMovie HD) yet. I'm going to install the update anyway and see what happens.

That was certainly a quick update. Just released less that a week ago. Just shows that Apple is always busy working to keep satisfied customers.

I haven't used iMovie HD yet, but in general that kind of sluggishness is caused by excessive paging in my experience. (This is what happens when you don't have enough memory and the OS has to use the hard disk to present the illusion of having more.) And that sounds like a big project that could consume any amount of memory you throw at it.

My dual 1.8 G5 with 512MB was pretty much a dog once you got a few things running, but now with 2GB it's much, much better. To keep an eye on disk activity (which, if you're not loading/saving anything, is a good indicator of paging), I use MenuMeters from ragingmenace.com (or see VersionTracker) which puts nice little system vitals in your menu bar.

I've tried the same thing now with the update and have a question:

Am I going to have to upgrade each and every project to work with 05?

If you browse to the project folders of 04, it won't see them and open them - does anyone else get this?

Nig.

Can anyone tell me if the sync problem they fixed is the one where if you record a video with your digital camcorder set to 12 bit mode, the audio slips in relation to the video when you burn a DVD with iDVD? That's the only sync problem I ever had, but it didn't appear until the DVD - never showed up in iMovie, although maybe that's where the problem originated. Anyway, this bug has been around for several versions so I hope they've fixed it.

And while I'm posting on here, does anyone know how I can fix DVD's that were burned with this sync problem? The gap in time between the audio and video gets progressively worse as you go farther into the DVD. Starts out fine, and by the time you're an hour into the program, it looks like a 1950's Godzilla movie.

Of course, there are those who would say that Apple were to have released a bug-free version of Panther in 2006, it would be better than the current pace of Tiger .4.0 in 2005. But, that's not the way software development works these days, and it is worth noting that the real world is, sadly, the best testbench.

Personally, there seem to have been a few more complaints online following the release of iLife 05 than 04 (and iMovie 3 was FULL of rather obvious issues that 04 fixed), so I'm a bit more skeptical about this update compared to last. Releasing a bugfix this quickly might be a sign of poor quality control, but it could just as well be a sign that Apple is responsive with a bug that just didn't become apparent until the variety of oddball projects and setups people have in the wild started to have at it.

One issue cropped up with iMovie HD for users of Formac DV Studio digitizers: they no longer worked. I know because it happened to me and there is a thread on Apple discussions pages (support section) about this.

Formac went into a panic and asked users not to upgrade to iMovie HD until the issue was resolved by Apple.

Apparently the digitizers now work using the iMovie update (5.0.1).
