Why can't VLC display .srt files?

I have 2 files, movie.avi and movie.srt
They're in the same folder with the same file name

I tried using VLC to open them but it doesn't load but shows this error message instead:

freetype: failed to load font file /System/Library/Fonts/LucidaGrande.dfont

Can anyone decipher what this means & what I should do to be able to load the files? I've tried checking my Fonts folder to see if there's anything wrong with the font but Lucida Grande but there's none. I've tried applications like Cellulo as well but to no avail

Thank you!
