New Dual Core PowerMac G5's

I really want to uprade my 1.6 G5 Powermac

I have always wanted a Dual Processor System.

I could get one now.
but i know new Powermacs are overdue to an update
i can only hope that Dual Core Processors will be comming soon

anyone hear of when an update might come

Gee, just what we needed, another PowerMac release date speculation thread.

The updates will happen between now and WWDC. The later it happens, the more likely they are to be dual core processors. However, dual core procs are not a sure thing even if they don't get announced until WWDC.

does it matter that there have been similar threads.
and besides old threads tend to go way off topic anyways.

somehow I doubt it would be a whole year between updates.
it should be any day now.

i bet dual core wont show until WWDC but one can only hope

Yeah, enough with the G5 upgrade speculation threads. It will get here when it gets here. This is probably the same response you get at the Apple store each week as well.

What will the updates include

New speed bumb/dual core

Nvidia GeForce 6200 as the entry and 6600 and ATI's X800 as options

(would like the entry level to have the next gen chip like the 6200

And will they be PCIe
512MB RAM standard (and will it bge DDR2

)
The new version of the superdrives
Bigger HDD's

I predict a yearly update for Powermacs. Perhaps have the 2nd generation DVD drive or at least match the specs on current drives. I also am looking forward to seeing a chart that compares the speed increases percentages between Intel and IBM like last year. Currently, IBM has had 0% speed increase since the 2.5 Ghz G5. I don't remember what Intel was at but I think it was 3.6 Ghz last year and I thought I saw the latest is at 3.8 Ghz that was shipping.

I don't know about speed "Bumb" (sic) or dual core, but if its not PCIe then its going to be a shamble. All of the next gen GPUs are going to be PCIe native.

Memory doesn't need to be DDR2 as the crossover point where performance is better is about DDR2-667/DDR1-400. And if you think Apple RAM prices are bad now, just wait till you see what DDR2 pricing will be like. If they are going to do anything to memory, I hope they get an integrated dual channel memory controller a la AMD64.

Other than that, a few more hard drive bays would be nice.

Only a gig. Wow, your needs are minimal. I have a 2 gig PowerMac G4 and it's very noticable that it doesn't have enough memory.

I joined this board in December 2003. What was the big discussion then? What would be announced as updates for the G5 PowerMacs at MacWorld SF in Jan. '04? (No to mention the neverending, always boring, predictions concerning G5 laptops.)

In other words, don't bet the farm on Apple's (or IBM's) ability to deliver significant updates to the PowerMac line. Updates will come -- but I've given up on predicting a date (or even a year).

On my current computer I have 512MB RAM DDR400 but a gig would be better

What work do you do on your computer

And your G4 has it got DDR RAM if not then 2gig is the same as 1gig of DDR

Ofcourse I would like to have 2gig but don't have the money

I play with Photos - the 2 applications take a fair bit of memory. And that's in additon to having a web browser, mail and a few other apps running at the sa,e time as well.

And your G4 has it got DDR RAM if not then 2gig is the same as 1gig of DDR

Very not true. 1 gig of memory can only hold 1 gig no matter what type it is.
