You can designate what application you want to launch when a camera is detected.
MBP 15", Apple 27" LED Cinema Display, iPhone6 and 4S, iPad Air, 4GB iPod Nano, Canon 1Ds3 and a couple L's, a lighting strategy and most important, imagination.

You can also use Image Capture (in your Application folder) to tell which program to launch (or do nothing in your case) when different devices such as an iPhone, P&S camera, SD card etc connect to your Mac.
iMac 27" Core i7 3.4Ghz, 16GB Ram, 1TB HD, 2GB 6970
iPhone 5 32 GB Black; iPad mini 32GB White
Canon 7D; EF-S 15-85; Sigma 30 1.4; EF 50 1.8; EF 100 L Macro; EF 70-200 II L 2.8; EF 2X III Extender

Open Image Capture
connect your camera or insert your memory card
once it pops in the image capture there will be a tiny arrow on lower left corner. hit it.
choose whatever program you want or hit other for more.
