iPod iPod Photo (4G) not charging w/ any car chargers

I just got an iPod Photo (4G from 2005) that will only charge via USB (connected to MacBook) and will not charge w/ any of my iPod car chargers.

Is it defective or did Apple, for some reason, set it up this way? Which charger will work with it?
