I just bought a Iomega Blackbelt Edition 1TB External Hard Drive. I want to put all my songs and photos onto the hard drive. How can I do this to free space on my computer?

You must format it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with Disk Utility. Alternatively, you can use FAT32 or exFAT if you need compatibility with Windows.

okay so should i use time machine to back everything up?

you would only use time machine to make back ups your macbooks INTERNAL HDD.

so dont do that unless you want to

also, if you use the HDD for time machine, you cant store anything else on the drive, unless you partition the drive.

Drag and drop it in finder from the internal hard drive to the external drive. Then move the original files to the trash and empty the trash. Don't use time machine, and make sure you external hard disk is formatted as FAT32 so it works in mac-s and pc-s.
