CNet reports that Apple is expected to announce a "new high-speed connection technology" soon, according to a source.
Apple is expected to adopt this Intel technology in the near future--but likely use a name other than Light Peak, a source familiar with this aspect of Apple's plans said. Intel has said in the past that the first products using Light Peak should appear in the first half of 2011.
While Intel has used the name "Light Peak", Apple will apparently brand the connection under another name.

Light Peak is significantly faster than USB 3.0, which may explain Apple's reluctance to adopt that standard if Light Peak is just around the corner. It's not clear if next week's MacBook Pro announcements will be related, but there were vague hints that the MacBook Pros would have additional enhancements beyond the upgraded Sandy Bridge processors.

Looks like I'm upgrading soon =D

Edit: what are the transfer speeds like with lightpeak?

Not to the average consumer. Sending a word document to a laser printer will not save you any time whether it's Light Peak or USB 1.0. Existing technology on the wired side is more than adequate for Apple's target market.
You're forgetting that a lot of average joe's now have an iDevice and notice slow performance. This would be killer for syncing large apps, etc.

Sorry, but what about video/audio devices? Is not just about data transfer(as in small documents).

Mistake by Apple IMO, USB 3.0 is fine, backwards compatible and fast enough.

Light Peak... first it does not deliver power, and if they go copper, then what's the point?

I wonder how Apple will adopt this technology.. could they migrate fully to lightpeak and dump USB, firewire and the display port? is it possible to have converters? I hope that Apple puts more of a push behind this technology than it did with Firewire.

Apple doesn't care about syncing speeds with wired connections for iDevices. The original iPod synced via Firewire, but they later removed support for it altogether in favor of USB2. It's been USB2 only for years.

Clearly it's not about speed.

What about them? Anyone who has an actual need to move mass amounts of data probably isn't in Apple's target market anyways. On the video side, Firewire is well entrenched as the connection of choice anyways.

Can't we just add these nonsense rumors together and be done with it: iPad 3 will have Retina display, quad core processors, and Light Peak. You've heard it here first

Honestly, why even bother with wired technology at this point? Apple has already made their bed in the consumer arena, and the future of consumer electronics is wireless.

You don't want a single port that can handle ALL of your connections? Drives, monitors, networking, and all other peripherals?

It is still performing great on copper, and first it does deliver power (on copper) + data on fibre optic; moreover, LP is being developed to be backward compatible with USB 1/2/3.0, HDMI, Ethernet, FireWire 400/800 and else.
