mid-2010 mbp keeps kernel panicking!

this is the 2nd time in 2 days that i got a kernel panic and perhaps the 5th or 6th time overall since i got the computer in late november of last year.

i am just browsing as usual in safari with intel gpu off because that was causing glitches in safari before (unrelated) so i just leave it off by default.

anyone know how to read the log and advice the nature of these kernel panics?

strictly using the nividia dedicated gpu, though, and still kernel panicks?

i am also wary of sending it to the apple store and have them do all these stuff and replacing the logic board and all of that and then still have the same problem.

I was having this same exact problems for months and months w/ my 2010 15 inch MBP. 4 trips to the Apple store. They ran tests, replaced my logic board but nothing worked. I even tried a clean install but that didn't fix the problem until I realized that I had Safari in 32bit mode for a specific Slingbox add on. I deleted and reinstalled Safari and made sure it was in 64bit mode and I haven't had a kernel panic since. It has been almost two weeks since I've had one! I was averaging about 1 or more kernel panics a week, so you could imagine how fed up I was getting. So yeah, make sure you're running it in 64 bit mode. If you are, try deleting and reinstalling Safari. If that doesn't work, try doing a total clean install.

i checked activity monitor and says safari is running in 64-bit mode. i guess i can always clean install but that is like the equivalent of 3 kernel panicks in 3 hours. lol! half-kidding, of course.

just hoping for a collective analysis of these kernel panicks from people who may know more than i. i feel like the apple genius is the last resort.

I would check to make sure that your RAM isn't bad. You can take off the bottom plate of the MBP (instruction at ifixit.com) and try one stick of RAM at a time to see if your problem is still there. If it stops when you take one of the sticks out then you know you have bad RAM. Good luck with your problem!

doesn't bad ram cause immediate panic? making my computer unusuable? it seems like my computer has a case of the regular kernel panic. like, my computer is fine until a random event triggers it. it just seems like it is happening more than it should on this computer of only 2 months old.

my ram is OK according to system profiler. also, it would be really hard to duplicate a kernel panic by removing one of the rams one by one to see if it's the culprit, which i don't think it is.

no, i don't torrent. and all my apps are legit. also didn't upgrade the ram or anything else. the only thing i have downloaded since i got the computer in late november was gimp because i can't afford ps. lol. it's kind of disconcerting these kernel panics are that it makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with the computer. of course, right after i shut it off and turn it back on as instructed, the computer acts normally as if nothing ever happened. the only thing that reminds you is the the system log that pops up and prompts the user to ignore or to report it. i've all reported mine, of course, and i just hope someone at apple reads them and that they find a fix for it because i am obviously not the only one having these kernel panic attacks.

what is "Error code: 0x00000002?"

i forgot to mention that I do have a usb keyboard attached to the mpb. the older white model before the aluminum ones came out. i don't think that could cause it. it's not ram since they're good. but, i do have a bamboo fun pen tablet connected as well, which i double as my mouse. i have just installed the latest driver for it from wacom. so, i hope it was that. i don't really know what else to do.

well, good luck. let me know how it goes for you. although, i am wary how they can fix your computer if, indeed, you are having the same trouble as me and that what you say about safari is true that it is causing the problem.

my mbp after the KP attacks i posted above has been free of KP's since then.

we'll see how the new update (10.6.7) holds up.

i didn't do anything differently. my kernel panics occurred while normally browsing the web using safari. and it usually occurred while i was on the intel integrated graphics. so, i turned off "automatic graphics switching" and exclusively used the nvidia gpu all the time. it solved the problem. the kp's that i posted about above occurred when i tested the waters again by turning on the "automatic graphics switching" just to see b/c i was curious and i wanted tp save battery power. lo and behold, i had those kp attacks above. since then, it hasn't occurred interestingly enough, in so far, as browsing in safari is concerned with the intel gpu. i have "automatic graphics switching on" now and it hasn't caused any kp's.

i don't know why this is. just that it is not happening now (the kp's). maybe, something got updated in safari or something that solved the issue with the mid-2010 mbp's? i don't know.

i also don't know in what circumstances your friend's kp's are occurring in. but, maybe someone here (not me) can help if he/she post the system logs after a kp occurs. your friend's high frequency of kp attacks sounds alarming and i would have had an apple genius or certified tech take a look at my mbp, if i had that many occurring with my computer.
