I keep getting a weird slowly descending curtain of shadow and then it says in about 5 different languages to hold down the power button.

it seems to happen when i tether my iphone and have utorrent turned on but I don't know if it's to do with the USB drivers being dodgy (I never had problems with the previous build MBPs)

here are some crash reports, they don't make much sense to me as i'm a windows boy.

It probably has a bad stick of RAM. Are you anywhere near an Apple Store? I'd exchange it for a new one.

Thanks for your input

I had performed a hardware test (holding down D while the number two CD was in) but it said all is normal.

I just returned the one I got on friday because music would skip while i played it on VLC at full blast and also if I used the two finger scroll function on the trackpad on Windows via bootcamp the motherboard would make a strange monotone beep noise...

this bites! the 2010 15" was way better than this new one; to be fair tho, at least I dont seem to have any overheating issues.

is there no way to revert to 10.6.5?

Same problem

Hi There!

I've got the same computer as you. And experience the same problem. I started to believe it was a problem with the theetering, because of the usb kext that doesnt load.

Mine hangs while on skype call, using the isight and mic.

Thats a bit wierd if its only the ram, because i've got the same configuration as you.

Edit: I also preformed the hardware test without it promting any problems.

Hey, it's nice when it works, isn't it?

I think I may have found a sort of "solution" for the problem. What are you using to connect to the internet?

When I used my iphone to tether via USB it seemed to cause a problem but I've managed to get a dongle to work on it and since using that I haven't had a crash even while running utorrent.

The USB controllers seem buggered somehow...

I am having similar crashing issues with my 2011 13" MBP. It hasn't acted like this at all in the past few weeks, and the only thing thats changed is I am using it in the car tethered to my iphone. If other people are having these things crash like this when tethered I can only assume thats it. I will try tethering through wifi for a bit and see if that fixes it for now.

Repeated crashes on MBP 13' when tethered to iPhone

I've just had the same crash happen three times in a row while tethered to iPhone and connected to charger. Seems to start after battery became fully charged. I've disconnected charger and running on battery. Seems to be ok now.

Hope they patch it soon.

I am also having the same issue with my new 2011 MBP 17

I am also getting constant kernel panics when I tether from my Iphone via USB. Its very frustrating. I did all the resets and re-intalls. I have been on the telephone with Apple care and the person helping me states this is an isolated problem. Same thing occurs all the time. I'm so close of returning it.

Same problem on a new 17" early 2011 MBP. When tethering to my iPhone 4 over USB my laptop kernel panics. I swapped out my original 4GB memory with 8GB memory I picked up locally and still have the same problem. I was tethering my old early 2009 mbp the same way and never experienced this problem. So frustrating.

Take it back now while it still under warranty!!! Time is important and if don't get it serviced now you have nobody to blame but yourself.

And replace it with what? Another MBP that's sure to have the same problem? From the number of reports I've seen here, and on Apple's forums this seems to be rather widespread, most likely a software/firmware problem.

Tethering over wifi seems to cause no problems at all, so its not really a big problem for me.

It might not be a problem for YOU but it is a problem. With this, overheating, inability to upgrade to >10.6.6, and screen issues, this MBP might be the fastest but least stable computer Apple has released in years. I really hope they roll out fixes in 10.6.7 and don't wait until Lion to fix their flagship machine.

it tethers just fine over wifi and also on the windows partition so it must be something to do with the USB i/o with the iphone 4, most queer. Also when I use my mobile phone dongle, it doesn't panic.

I'm sure they'll be releasing some updates soon. apart from that one issue, kernel panics, it's a great machine. the hardware is fine, it's just the software, hence no point in returning it.

just use windows 7 until Apple gets round to releasing some driver updates (10.6.7 is rumoured to be released soon)

I'm also having similar issues of intermittent kernel panics while tethering. I've had them come up while using a variety of programs -- the most common offending process thread has been mDNSresponder (which gives me little information). However, my 'IONetworkingFamily' kext is almost always the offender, along with variable USB kexts.

I'm on a MBP15 (early 2011, 10.6.6), tethering to a 3GS (iOS 4.3) -- were previous posters all on iPhone 4?

Although hardware testing produced no RAM errors, I took the machine to the :apple:Genius Bar just in case. They suggested a reformat, which has not solved the problem.

I guess waiting until 10.6.7 is probably the best bet. I'll switch to bluetooth tethering and will post again if the issue is not solved.

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: uTorrent

These seem to be your culprits. Have u guys tried an IO (PRAM) reset. Also have you done the SMC reset? It might also be a uTorrent issue. Finally, submit a bug report to Apple.

This is NOT a uTorrent issue... since I don't have uTorrent installed and it was still crashing. Bug reports have been submitted, and nothing has to be reset, I think we can confirm that this is a software (hopefully) bug that Apple needs to fix in 10.6.7.

Could be the freeze under load issue being reported at numerous places, including here on MacRumors. No reliable fix has yet been found.

I'm also experiencing this problem. While my iPhone is plugged via USB and tethering enabled. It's still a problem on 10.6.7.
