In order to benchmark head to ->Big Buck Bunny and download the 1920x1080 MP4.

Encode using the Apple TV 2 preset and report back with length of encode, average FPS, and your Mac's specs. If willing, run the same encode 3 times and report averages but if you can't 1 is helpful too.

If your machine has different specs, i.e. more RAM, I'll update with your specs. As they're reported I'll update this post for all users.

I agree, and to try to clean up the benchmarks I'm going to remove drive size in the specs of the machines.

Ugh, my shipment of my mbp has been delayed it seems. But anyways I'm very interested in seeing encoding performance of the new machines!

You can use these free clips to do the encode testing, just be sure and note on your test which clip you used.

I got my new MBP the other day and did some Handbrake encodes over the weekend.

I have the "base" 15", so 2.0GHz quad-core i7. It replaced a 4-year old 15" MBP that was 2.16GHz core 2 duo (late 2006 design).

I typically encode straight from the DVD and use the Apple Universal preset. I would typically get 15-16 FPS on the old MBP, although some DVDs would drop to the 8-10 range. This is SD content.

The new MBP was doing encodes in the 125-130 FPS range

If you all want very complex encodes to try out for a more difficult speed test you could paste this into the advanced settings box for the apple tv 2 preset using an HD movie. My computer right now gets around 1-2 fps with these settings.

Big Buck Bunny is a good clip to encode with. If we can decide, collectively, on the settings I'll update the main post.

I think getting a good idea of the difference between processors will help a lot of new and current members make decisions.

Is there any way to get Handbrake to retain/display the average FPS and encode time after the conversion is finished? I see where that information is during the encode but it disappears as soon as the encode completes.

There's an encoding log once the encode is finished.

Results:

[18:43:01] work: average encoding speed for job is 42.266727 fps

Encode time was 5:39 as far as I was able to make out. The log didn't give me a time so I had to work it out manually from the start and finish times.

I know two are free and the last two are Mac Apps...

I just want the best program to redo some formats and maintain optimal sound and video quality.

Just an fyi... I've encoded that video in the past with handbrake and had issues. Double check that the runtime of the encoded video matches the original. It appears to finish successfully, but actually ends early and leaves a very short encoded video.

The torrent seems to have many seeds and is downloading pretty quickly.

Total average: 10 min. 42 sec @ 23.280579 avg fps

Not sure why my first run took so much longer. Seems like runs 2,3,4 are most representative of what you would get. Anyhow, hope this helps someone.

In other words confirming what we already know, having an SSD doesn't improve encode speeds. I think this test would be much more interesting if users with older Macs posted as well. Get some 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 Macs for comparison. HandBrake (or really ffmpeg encoding) is also probably one of the few pure CPU applications that scales linearly with raw CPU performance.
