I went onto live chat with an Apple representative and said my feelings. I said that I recently got a replacement iPhone 4 and that they switched the screws to pentalobe screws with out my permission and that I think it's against my consumer rights. Here are the representatives exact words, "For information on getting this other set of screws back on your iPhone, I do recommend that you contact are AppleCare Team. The number for our iPhone AppleCare Department is 1-800-694-7466. If you would like, you can also make an appointment at your local Apple Retail Store to check on having them changed back." I'm not sure if this guarantees I will have my screws replaced back to the Phillips, but I'm going to call in a minute and if you would like me to I can update this thread with what they say.

Correct me if I am wrong, but opening your phone will void the warranty. So why would they replace the screws for you to the phillips ones?

We've been screwed by Apple (again)

Yesterday my battery suffered a mini explosion.

Went to the genius bar.

They were very courteous, but after 40 minutes in the back, gave me my phone back with a new battery and pentalobe screws.

In so many words, tough ----

All Apple appliances will be equipped with pentalobe screws.

Argggg

Well, I just got off the phone with the "iPhone specialist". First, he didn't even know what screws I was talking about so I had to explain it to him three times. He said that in order for me to get my old screws I need to go to home depot and buy them myself and buy a pentalobe screw driver and he said this will void my warranty, but yet he told me that's what I need to do. He also said to take it to an Apple Store, but then before I hanged up the phone he said Apple Stores probably won't do it. I am a huge Apple Fanboy, but after this **** I'm pissed. They went against my rights and now they're saying they can't do anything about it?!

Your rights? Really? If you want to take apart the phone so badly you have the right to go purchase a screwdriver that will work with those screws...

lol i know, but i have rights as a consumer and they changed the screws with out my permission plus i paid $200+ so why would i need to pay an extra $30 dollars to change the screws. i dont want to take it apart but i like the feeling knowing if needed i could take it apart.

why did you take you phone to them in the first place? without your permission, its not that big of a deal you can purchase those pentalope drivers online. if apple has screwed you guys again then maybe you should get a different phone, its just two screws.

I took it to them because my phone overheats, the backplate clicked, and the phone completely died. like it wouldnt charge, turn on, and itunes didnt even recognize it. i know its two screws but they couldve asked because thats my device. thats like changing the pass code lock on you iphone with out your permission and not telling you.

did they give you your phone back or a new one? i have taken my phone in a few times with even more minor problems and they always give me new phones and all but my original has had the pentalobe screws.

Wow, great hyperbole. :rolleyes: Changing the passcode would prevent you from using your phone. Changing 2 screws does not affect your ability to use the phone.

I didn't think it was a great hyperbole. Your passcode lock keeps you from using your iPhone and the screws keep me from doing what I want with my phone. They both lock us out basically so yeah. Maybe it wasn't obvious, but I thought it was a great metaphor.

Dude, if you need to disassemble your non-user serviceable device you need the proper tools, (a $2 screw driver) to drive the pentalope screws, (that are MUCH less likely to strip then a Philips.)

...you know this how? The reports I heard mentioned that the pentalobe was actually easier to strip.

Just ask the genius bar to replace your screws. I'm sure they will if you fuss enough. If not, then buy the set of screwdrivers and screws from ifixit. Last time I checked, it cost $10.

Wow... You guys are giving the guy crap because they changed the screws on HIS phone WITHOUT his permission. I say most of you have drank a bit to much from the teat of apple and are now drunk with stupidity. It's not an issue of how much it will cost to "change" the screws back. It's an issue of a company changing something on an item without the owners consent. Now if OP goes and does an exchange and the "new" phone has the new screws than so be it but this isn't the scenario now is it.
Some of you really need to get over yourself, stop sucking apple's johnson and stop giving a guy crap.

I say take it back to apple and make them change it back.

Ok, lets get this straightened out.

First and foremost, life is not about what's fair, it's about what's in the contract. Period. If you agree to contractual terms, that becomes what's fair.

That being said, the contract that all of us agreed to upon purchase of the iPhone, or subsequent repair/service of said device, allow equivalent part replacement without consent from the consumer.

Read the contract.

It says on page 1 of Apple's iPhone warranty and service contract that any parts or pieces of your phone may be replaced with new or refurbished parts that are in equivalent function of the original part. Upon replacement of the said part, the replacement part is your property and the replaced part becomes Apple's property.

Were the screws replaced with a new or refurbished part of equivalent function? Yes. Was it ok for Apple to do so? Yes.

Read the contract and stop your whining. It's nauseating.

To me the intention is to make it harder for consummer to open up the backplate cover, period.

Bingo!!! Because Apple would rather the consumer not open the device. many company's make it difficult for there products to be opened. a pentalobe screw driver is not tough to get as mentioned. people tend to whine too much! $6 bucks on ebay shipped. :rolleyes:

Apple performed the service in accordance to the contract.
Period.
Contract > your feelings about it.
