So, I bought a baseline 13" macbook upgraded the ram to 8gb and the 500gb HD. I sent it back because the hard drive was incredibly noisy.

I have just recieved a new one and this is just as noisy. Is everyone's noisy?

Same here, my stock 320g is virtually silent. Is the 500g model you ordered a 7,200 rpm? If so that will account for the increased noise.

Bingo.

Although if you ordered from Apple I don't think they offer a 7200 RPM option on the 13"--probably for that exact reason.

I tried just about every 500 GB 7200 RPM drive Microcenter sells in my 13" i5 and ALL of them created unacceptable amounts of vibration. None of the 5400 RPM drives were a problem, even the 640 GB drive I tried.
