I have a G4 466MB connected by firewire cable to an imac 400MB. I want to move stuff from the G4 to the imac, but when I try anything over about 100 MB it freezes up.

First off its Mhz not MB, i've never really had a problem like that in my use of Target Mode. I'd have to say either transfer your data in smaller chunks and check out the Apple Discussion pages to see if anyone else has had this problem. You'd be surprise how many times I thought I was the only one with and problem to only discover that there were many people having the same thing happen.
if you can i would try attempting to move your stuff in smaller pieces, i bet its because of bandwith limitations or how fast everything can be written to the harddrive
