First Review on intel 320 postville refresh 80gb unit
Note it is google translated chinese to english. The 80gb size ssd was used to review.
It seems that the best thing is you will get a 300 gb and a 600 gb size due to smaller size flash chips.. Seems like the gen2 controller well at least it is not the marvel. Still maybe the bigger size models are faster. http://translate.google.com/translat...m%2F14414.html Last edited by philipma1957; Mar 24, 2011 at 01:21 PM. Reason: spelling |

Nice find. If this leads to more GB for the same price it sounds good to me.

You are welcome
I get lucky some mornings. mdgm I did not forget you. I can't figure out a triple quote. Right now if they sell the 600gb at 1119 usd it will be the best price for the biggest ssd. The Iops and speed are good. I want a 1tb ssd at a low cost maybe 750, but that is years away. At the size of 600gb and if it works this may be my next upgrade. So it appears it is the same controller as found in the current Intel X-25 SSD, with a few tweaks and 25nm NAND Flash.
One can argue it delivers enough performance for most needs.

Doesn't play in the high end league, though.
Personally, I wouldn't overestimate this drive. Sure the IOPS numbers are good, but reviews have shown that even the 510 performs about as good as the Vertex3, albeit having considerably lower IOPS. I'm definitely waiting for 1 to 1 comparisons between 320 and 510. |

The success of this drive rests solely on the price points. You can currently get OWC 240GB drives for around $500. If the G3 300GB drive is not at or below $450, it's a loser.

people will take the extra 60 gb over the speed of the owc and if the g3 has the reliability of the g2 (it has same controller ) selling the 300gb for 500 will work. Selling the 600gb for 1119 is too high I am thinking it will settle around 925 to 975. Still more then I want to pay. |

I suspect you may be right. I suppose 300GB is about 20% more storage than 240GB. However, 25nm NAND should cost about half what 34nm NAND cost so I'd like to see a 300GB 25nm drive another 20% cheaper than a 240GB 32nm SSD, otherwise I'll feel ripped off.
