So yesterday I tried to sign up for the Mac and Safrai dev programs.

TThey took my info, and my $99+ Tax then after I get my Enrollment code they want a notarized gov't ID?

WTF?

Apple will take the exact same info for MobileMe, iTunes, and I even used the same info to order a $1,300 laptop last week, but for a $99 program they want a notarized ID? How stupid is that?

Call them. This happened to me and was cleared up in literally 5 seconds on the phone.

I'm on hold as I type.

So the problem was that I dont use Jr on my name, but its on my Credit card so that freaked out the system.

Apparently they compair your registration name vs your billing info for your verification, the rest of the Apple sites just match names then if your CC gets billed right then you are ok to go.

I had the opposite problem. My middle initial is on my CC, but I had nowhere to put it in their form, so I added it to the first name field. As soon as I called them the guy on the other end said. "I see the problem." type type type "Try it now". Literally 5 seconds after I gave him my reference number.

:p

Not stupid at all. I want Apple (and the feds) to be able to identify (and hunt down) anyone who submits an app later found to be malware of some sort. Not just collect $99.

That type of evil app ended up on thousands of Android devices. It's great that Apple is trying to reduce the chance that any app on my device from the App store is from a developer that law enforcement can't ID.

Whoa whoa WHOA there buddy! What does the federal government have to do with malware? I can understand roads, police, and infrastructure, but malware is most certainly subjective. Does a toolbar that offers smileys in your email, but also send out spam, count as malware? Maybe for you it does, but your grandma who WANTS those smileys would be PISSED if her federal government took them away.

Anyway, please get your facts straight. That "bad" malware you speak of, was removed from users phones with a kill switch.

Many types of financial fraud and identity theft are federal crimes in the U.S., and likely in many other countries as well. Not sure if trying to take over your computer to use it to send phishing and porn spam email is also a federal crime (IANAL), but it should be. There exists malware that does all of the above with PCs.
