Want to trade

Im sure someone here has an old g4 laying around.. but I never even thought of this.. just i was wondering.. ive been wanting to switch for a long, long time, but am going to wait for the next pb revision after the summer.. I have a p4 2.4 ghz custom built computer in a sweet case, neon light, 120gb hd, geforce 4 mx440 video card, cd burner, 512mb of i think crucial ram, and running windows xp home.. if anyone is thinking about trading for a g4 that i could upgrade, let me know. You should consider trying ebay, i don't think you will get much for it here. I hate to state the obvious but this is a mac forum

if i was going to trade for a g5 powermac with 512 mb of ram 1.8 ghz dual with bt and airport extreme.. how much do you think i should give ontop of the trade?? i was thinking around 1000... because if i bought that system new it would cost about 1900 with my educational discount, and the person that has the powermac, also used the edu discount.. And then if my system is like 600, and then drop the price a little bit because it is used, so thats where i get around 1000 from.. anyone agree?? I feel its fair..

You should post your PC at http://www.craigslist.org. Go to the New York section and post it under computers. Craigslist is free, no fees, most of the people are legit and it is local so you don't have to deal with shipping.

You're probably going to end up giving a little closer to $1200 if you go through with the trade, but I would agree that $1000 is a good place to start negotiating. What's strange about Apples is that even though a better-spec'd mini is $500, G4 towers are still going for almost $1000, with the duals running even higher. Because PCs, like new cars, lose value pretty much immediately (cursed commodity markets), it might be a better investment for you personally to put that $1100-1200 toward a basic iMac and keep your PC.

If upgradability is your concern, you should probably know that even PowerMacs don't really go that far. It's not a PC, and its only real upgradeable advantage over the iMac is the GPU for consumer tasks. The RAM and to some extent the hard drive are both upgradeable in the iMac, and there is reason to believe that the whole midplane is upgradeable (including the CPU and GPU), should better iMac G5s come along. I'm a very active upgrader on my PCs, but the Macs that I've had in the past (and will soon have again) go much longer without upgrade/replacement, and also hold their value very well (in part because of the long life versus PC counterparts).

This is all a very longwinded way of saying that you should evaluate your needs and maybe get a mini, an iMac, or even an iBook for the 1000-1200 you'll be spending on that G5 tower trade--and be able to have both computers.

those upgrades are fine for me.. im not a very heavy user, just a little photoshop, and once in a blue moon some video editing, besides that just internet.. but i download a lot of stuff, so i need to upgrade the hd pretty easily, and i like to upgrade the ram. So i think i will start negotiating at 1000.

An external firewire hard drive would be just as effective for that, and likely preferable (scratch disk). I'm not trying to dissuade you, just trying to be helpful and point out all possibilities .

Coupled with either an iMac or a mini, it'd work out well for you, and if you format it so that it is Windows-compatible, you can even move it from PC to Mac to get faster than network transfer speeds.
