What would you do, and why?
I purchased my first iMac about two months ago. It was the top of the line 2.93ghz version. The first one I received had scratches on it so I sent it back for a replacement. The second one I received had the yellow tint issue on the screen so I sent it back. After realizing that a new iMac was going to be released soon I just told the rep I wanted a refund. He then stated that if I want to buy the new iMac when it releases just contact him and he will give me a $200 credit for all the hassle.
I also have the 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2ghz model. While waiting on the new iMac I have been questioning whether or not the iMac is worth all of the trouble and maybe I should just buy a cinema display and use my laptop as my desktop. Issues with the iMac? Yellow tint, dust behind glass, dust internally that can't be cleaned, smoke screen...etc. What would you do? Buy the cinema display or buy the iMac? |

Having a single computer is quite nice. I would say go with with the ACD.
But then again, it depends on what you plan to do with your computer. |

Buy a display. If money is no object, sure a cinema display. If you're not doing high end video or photography work, shop around to see what kind of monitor works for you.

Are there any reasons why I should still consider the iMac instead of just an ACD?

A portable is good as a portable and will serve its purpose. However, it will never truly be a desktop replacement no matter how powerful it may be. It's always a great idea to have that truck at home ready to do all of the heavy lifting when you need it while the sports car does your day to day things. I made the mistake of going completely portable in 2005 and purchased a PPC G4 portable Mac while there were more powerful G5 desktop Macs (including the iMac G5) available to me at the same time. At first, it was a great idea to think that I would have my work with me where ever I went but a couple of months after the purchase, I realized that my portable didn't move around much. It was plugged into the wall more times than I would run down the battery and always sat in the same spot at home doing the same work that I could do on a desktop. Fast forward to today, that same G4 has not moved in nearly a year. What I really needed to buy from the beginning was a desktop. Last edited by iMikeT; Mar 28, 2011 at 12:31 AM. |

Shop around and get a cheaper display if your not doing GFX work or movie editing.
You will seriously kick yourself when the new imacs come out if you get the ACD. |

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)
Why would i kick myself? The 2011 macbook pros are powerful as hell and even get better geekbench scores than the current top of the line imacs. Sure, i plan to wait and see the new imacs before i buy the ACD just in case there are any big surprises. |

It was an analogy where your answer, although true, doesnt apply to an imac. |

I don't think you ever stated what it is you need to do with your Mac. Knowing that tiny detail would be beneficial to both us who are replying to the thread you started and to you, who seems to not know what it is that you want. Quote:
I'm pretty sure that when the iMac gets updated with Sandy Bridge that the 2011 MBP geekbench will mean nothing when compared to the 2010 iMac. Just be ready for the surprise when that 3.4GHz quad-core desktop SB i7 iMac does better on the geekbench versus your 2.2GHz quad-core mobile SB i7 MBP. Why even ask people if you're just going to wait and see anyway? Last edited by iMikeT; Mar 28, 2011 at 04:36 AM. |

Simple. 2 minds are better than one. I may not be thinking of something. How about just answering the question? Of course the new imac will score higher on a geekbench? Does that mean anything? Really? Not so much anymore. As i stated, no matter what we do with our computers, it is getting to a point of diminishing returns. I could care less abour the geekbench when you will never see an actual difference anyways. Last edited by themac23; Mar 28, 2011 at 04:39 AM. |

That non-answer doesn't help. You should be a politician or a cop because you seem to be an expert at giving a spin. |

You brought up the geekbench, not me. Diminishing return? Not so much so. We still need the truck to do the heavy lifting. I done, run outta gas. |

Get a good quality monitor whether it be Apple branded or not, I've been borrowing one of these and using it with my 2011 15 MacBook Pro: http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/p...399&redirect=1 I like it alot and don't wanto give it back - it is alot clearer and sharper than the Apple Cinema displays I viewed at the Apple Store.
