This should be nice. 10.3.8 is nice but I am still having minor sleep problems with my PowerBook. Looks like it's almost that time again.

*counts $129 for Tiger*

I wonder if "Improved performance with windows networks" is in this one. it's been in like every other one, and mine still sucks.

But what is Tiger going to really do for us?
A whole new round of bug fixing. Beyond that?
Money in Apple's pocket, sure that's good.
But what has Tiger really got to offer that is so great.

Spotlight - Doesn't impress me. Just more overhead and a security hole.

Dashboard - A boring gimmick. We've already got that functionality.

.Mac & Sync improvements - Yuk - I don't like .Mac - it is over priced, under powered and not terribly useful.

Automator - I just hope it is a lot better than QuickKeys and AppleScript.

VoiceOver - I don't like to talk to the computer. Typing & mousing/trackpading is so much faster and easier. This also doesn't justify a new OS.

Parental Controls - 1) they won't get it right, 2) kids will hack it and 3) kids should be world ready because you'll never make the world safe. Oh, or maybe this is protection for the parents?!

iChat (ugh), Safari & Mail enhancements? Well, maybe but we don't need a new OS for that, just upgrade and fix the existing applications.

I do have to agree with you.
We have had a lot of bugs with 10.3 Server....
Very many things are just plain janky.

Apple has been telling us in several cases that the fixes for those things will be in 10.4 server...
Which to me is a copout....
When we identify bugs with a current OS those bugs should be fixed in the current OS...
As for 10.4 .... I'm willing to bet it wont be stable enough for us until at least 10.4.5 or 10.4.6 maybe even later...
That is if 10.3 is used as an example, because we were having more than 25 kernel panics a day on our 1835 xserves until 10.3.7(plus a new ethernet driver)

We have been testing every seeded release of the beta and it is very very very unstable so far.

1835 xserves?! WOW. Where are you employed? And what do they use them for. Virginia Tech only has 1100, and they are plastered all over the internet.... you have even more! Thats awesome. What are you doing with them? That would be one of the fastest supercomputers in existance!

The main reasons for me to upgrade to 10.4 will be CoreImage and CoreData. The new features built into the user interface are icing on the cake.

Personally, I think Spotlight will be a godsend (I'm horribly disorganized), Automator will make me look brilliant (as I whip up scripts to do everything for everyone), Dashboard will have some useful widgets to make Wintel users drool even more, Safari 2.0 will rock, and yes, the kids will hack the parental controls, but that means that by the time they're getting access to the bad stuff on the net, at least they'll be competent hackers (and that's a good thing).

So I'm stoked on Tiger. If all of the goodness under the hood, combined with a bunch of nice features isn't worth $129 to you, don't buy it. Panther is a great OS, and will be just as great the day after Tiger ships, so no one is saying you have to upgrade. But I certainly will, and eventually the OS world will leave Panther behind, so, eventually, you should probably consider upgrading too.

Cheers

If you need those then you have a reason for the upgrade.

Get launchbar it does it for you now.
Not a reason to upgrade.

Not much more than an Applescript frontend but if thats your thing another reason to upgrade then.

Windows users can already do the dashboard stuff with several freeware packages out there now.

Mac users can do this now too... with Konfabulator
Not a reason to upgrade.

Not an upgrade reason.

Another reason to get Tiger..

Hopefully implementing some new 10.4 features will depend on fixing old 10.3 bugs...

Personally I wish they would spend 10.3.9 optimizing performance on network file transfers and loading of folders on network volumes containing >10 files.. it's very very slow (if it loads the icons at all).. Really lame performance even over FireWire between two G4s.

smilez...

Wow...so when this is done, 10.3 will be perfect, right? Since there are no more numbers left before 10.4, there's no room for any mistakes in this release. I can't wait! Imagine...the perfect OS...my eyes are tearing up at the thought of such wonder...

or even

10.3.001
10.3.002
