Suggestions for a £1000 or less laptop

My friend is thinking of getting a laptop for under £1000, and has roped me in to help with this. i have tried my best, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas on a really good laptop in this price bracket. He wants something that will be able to play games, 15-17" screen, and that is pretty much all the guidance I have been given.
Any help would be appreciated! :)
 
He wants something that will be able to run games well, but he isn't great with computers, and he would rather not change to OSX. I have tried to persuade him, but his mind is made up on that aspect. :p

But if he really wants a serious gaming laptop, I would go with Alienware (as much as they're slagged off, they are truly the best gaming laptops on the market) but again they can range from £800-£2000

You'd struggle to place recent games with a Mac.

He's be best suited with a desktop, I can build a decent gaming desktop for £1000 easily.

What kind of games does he want to play?

He's not a massive gamer, and he wants the portability of a laptop: already tried to persuade him to go for desktop/laptop combo but he isn't interested.
Primarily the games he would like to be able to play are: Shogun 2, Skyrim and possibly portal 2.

I just tell them that I don't do any tech support for Windows. £999 gets you a very, very nice MacBook Pro 13". Alternatively, an iPad 2 will serve him possibly even better.

Just show him the iPad demo. Garageband alone will make him just WANT.

He wants it for gaming, a 13" MBP will probably not run Skyrim. And an iPad 2 just doesnt come into this bracket of purchase.

He can choose his custom laptop there, I just assembled a fairly good laptop there for £800.
 
Yeah iPad 2 and 13" macbook pro might not cut it sorry :p

Just to confirm, does Novatech have a decent reputation, as it is a relatively unknown brand and I wouldn't want to recommend it to my friend, only for it to break within a month or two. :p
